Elements for healthy work-life balance currently exist within Office for Research

  • 78% of responders agreed their supervisor was supportive of work-life balance.
  • 80% felt coworkers rallied together to meet tight deadlines.
  • Comments specifically mentioned that boundaries between work and life are present and working from home is a huge benefit.

In practice, work-life balance is inconsistent within Office for Research

  • Only 67% of staff feel they have work-life balance, 62% believe stress is manageable.
  • Taking work home and on vacation or delaying vacation due to work is not uncommon.
  • Possible causes: understaffing, pressure from external stakeholders.
  • Policies behind telecommuting and flexible working hours are poorly understood and not advertised.
  • Diverse variety of offices with diverse roles and responsibilities make universal policies difficult to implement.

Realities surrounding cost cutting and lack of merit increases make providing additional work-life benefits essential

  • Alternate rewards and benefits should be provided to keep an engaged and happy work force.
  • Telecommuting and flexible working hours are not the only possible benefits to offer.
